About Me

Purdue Biochemistry Student | John Martinson Honors College Student | Founder of Checkmates for Change

Hi! My name is Scott and I am a Biochemistry major in the John Martinson Honors College at Purdue University with aspirations of becoming an anesthesiologist. I'm passionate about integrating science, leadership, and community service to make a meaningful impact in both medicine and education.

At Purdue, I serve as a Teaching Assistant for Healthcare Leadership & Safety and as a Chemistry Tutor for the College of Science, where I foster student growth through mentorship and problem-solving strategies. My clinical experience at Hoehn Medical Center and CPOEP scribe training provided firsthand exposure to patient care, healthcare operations, and electronic documentation systems.

Beyond academics, I am the Founder and President of Checkmates for Change, a nonprofit organization that hosts monthly USCF-rated charity chess tournaments supporting local causes. I have also conducted independent research examining the relationship between chess and working memory as well as the effectiveness of disaster response frameworks, experiences that strengthened my analytical and scientific communication skills.

My long-term goal is to pursue medicine while continuing to combine education, leadership, and service to create lasting community impact.

Checkmates For Change

Non-Profit Work

Checkmates For Change is a student-led nonprofit organization based in West Lafayette, Indiana, dedicated to using chess as a force for good. Each month, we host USCF-rated charity tournaments where profits are donated to different causes all based in Indiana.

When I founded Checkmates For Change, I built this organization with one simple idea: every move on the chessboard can make a difference off it. Our tournaments bring together players of all ages and skill levels to compete, connect, and contribute to meaningful change in their community.

Beyond tournaments, I aim to grow a culture of service, strategy, and inclusion. By blending the critical thinking and sportsmanship of chess with the compassion of philanthropy, we empower players to make tangible impacts — one game at a time.

Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just learning how to castle, I invite you to join us me transforming chess into a platform for change.

Clinical Experience

Powers Health

During the Summer of 2025, I worked at Hoehn Medical Group, part of Powers Health, as a Student Healthcare Worker. In this role, I supported the clinic’s front-desk operations — managing schedules, maintaining inventory, and assisting physicians with daily administrative needs. The position gave me first-hand exposure to the fast-paced clinical environment and the teamwork that underpins patient care.

After completing the clinic’s Computerized Provider Order Entry Professional (CPOEP) scribe training program, I was invited to return during academic breaks as a PRN medical scribe, where I’ll continue to expand my understanding of medical documentation, provider-patient interaction, and the clinical decision-making process.

Mentoring & Tutoring Experiences

John Martinson Honors College Mentor

As an Honors Mentor, I guide incoming John Martinson Honors College students through their first-year transition—offering academic advice, leadership development, and community support. Through one-on-one check-ins and group discussions, I help new students navigate coursework, balance commitments, and find their place within the Purdue Honors community.

College of Science Chemistry Tutor (COSINE)

I provide one-on-one and group tutoring in General Chemistry through Purdue’s COSINE program, helping students strengthen problem-solving skills and conceptual understanding. Beyond academic support, I aim to build confidence in students by connecting course material to real-world applications in science and medicine.

Private Chess Tutor

I teach chess strategy and tactics to students of all ages, focusing on developing calculation skills, positional understanding, and confidence in competitive play. Drawing from my own experience as an expert level player, I tailor each lesson to the student’s goals—whether learning fundamentals, preparing for tournaments, or building long-term improvement habits.
